PUT ON YOUR BLUE GENES examines the relationship between modern biological science and art. A range of artistic positions from the field of biotech art will be shown in Germany for the first time. A video installation by the Tissue Culture & Art Project allows observers to participate in tissue culturing aimed at developing "victim-free meat consumption". Faced with charges of bio-terrorism in the USA, the Critical Art Ensemble's installation uses living bacteria cultures to simulate anthrax and question fears of renewed biological attack. Paul Vanouse uses his own family's DNA to stage a genetic competition, satirising both early eugenicist theory and contemporary scientism.
PUT ON YOUR BLUE GENES takes a critical look at a new direction in art, one which when not aimed at simply affirming biotechnological possibilities can offer the opportunity of a sensorily tangible exploration of genetics and biotechnology.
